Maine Island Wool

Maine Island Yarn. This most unique yarn is truly like no other you will find. Hailing from the 200 year old wild flock of North Country Cheviot sheep living on Metinic Island in the Penobscot Bay here in Maine. Straws Farm in Newcastle, Maine are the caretakers of this beautiful and very special flock. I’ve been using wool from these sheep since 2006. At first for my own hand spinning. In 2016 I bought my first in bulk fleeces from Lee Straw of about 20 pounds. I moved up to 40, then 60, and my latest clip, that I choose myself seconds after it came off the sheep’s back is 88pounds of raw white wool. I drove west to Green Mountain Spinnery for the first time this year to drop off the clip and have it be processed into a 2 ply worsted weight yarn. To be released later in 2024. How I love this Maine Island wool with all my heart.
